Top 10 2008 New England Calendars

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

New England is a four-season paradise, from spring's first apple blossoms to summer's beachside sunsets to autumn's golden glow to winter's icicled trees and wintry slopes. If you can't get away to New England as often as you'd like, scenic calendars can transport you throughout the year to some of New England's best-loved spots. Here are my picks for the best New England calendars for 2008.

1. New England Seasons 2008 Calendar

Photographer William Johnson was my collaborator on my coffeetable book, Backroads of New England, but even before we worked together, I was always fond of his annual "New England Seasons" calendars. The 2008 edition continues Bill's fine tradition of capturing New England's extraordinary beauty in winter, spring, summer and fall and has the added bonus of two splendid New England images each month.

2. New England Wilderness 2008 Calendar

You'll be able to imagine the New England discovered by the first European settlers with this collection of "wild New England" calendar images by Ian L. Barker. As densely populated as New England is, this calendar is a wonderful reminder of all that remains unspoiled within this lovely, six-state region.

3. New England Lighthouses 2008 Wall Calendar

This wall calendar is perfect for lighthouse lovers, who will enjoy the variety of seasonal lighthouse scenes, with their rich blue skies, puffs of clouds and dramatic coastal backdrops. Photographer Philip Wright has captured calming scenes of New England's majestic lights from Connecticut to Maine.

4. New England Travel & Events Calendar

If you live in New England or visit frequently, this is the calendar for you. In addition to a wide variety of New England scenes, this calendar features extra travel tidbits and a number of regional events each month. Although the images aren't quite as spectacular as those in my top three picks, the featured photos do a nice job of capturing the seasonal variations New Englanders cherish.

5. a new england engagement calendar 2008

Take New England along with you! This engagement calendar is by talented landscape photographer Chuck Theodore, who was born, raised, educated and still lives in New Hampshire. Draw inspiration from weekly views of the region's natural scenic beauty.

6. New England 2008 Calendar

The father-daughter team of Dick Dietrich and Diane Dietrich Leis captures some of New England's most recognizable scenes, from dramatically situated Portland Head Lighthouse to the sand dunes of Cape Cod, and yet, their images have a measure of uniqueness and unpredictability that makes them eye-catching, as well as familiar.

7. New England Places 2008 Calendar

This calendar focuses on structures in the New England landscape. If you've been to some of the places that photographer Joanne Pearson captures, this calendar might make a nice souvenir. And if you haven't, her beautifully composed shots will inspire you to dream. I especially like her images of a flower stand in Vermont and of a riverside windmill in Essex, Connecticut.

9. 2008 New England Scenic Engagement Calendar

This calendar features classic images of New England. It's on the small side, which makes it perfect for cubicles or small spaces, and with a price of under 10 bucks, it's the perfect little extra gift for someone who loves New England.

10. New England Lighthouses 2008 Calendar

Walter Choroszewski has been photographing New England lighthouses for many years. While some of the images in this calendar are lovely, particularly those of Avery Point Light in Connecticut and Rhode Island's Block Island Southeast Light, overall, the colors are not as rich nor the images as moving as those in the previous New England lighthouse calendar on my list.
